A two day symposium exploring Franz Brentano’s place in the development of
scientific philosophy.
Franz Brentano is known in France principally for his contributions to the
development of phenomenology. It is less well known that in Central Europe
he is considered the father of Austrian philosophy. The conference aims at
exploring his epistemology, its development in Austria and its place in the
development of scientific philosophy.
Themes to be discussed include detailed aspects of Brentano’s philosophy of
science, its relation to French philosophy of science both in terms of
historical influence and philosophical parallels, its distinctively Austrian
character, its relation to the Vienna Circle and later Austrian thought.
